It’s been several months since I posted anything here, which has left a small void in my routine given that I rather enjoyed sharing the matches I was watching, or the podcasts I was listening to, and generally trying to add to the discourse surrounding pro wrestling.
I must say, I find writing about wrestling to be quite odd in the online space; to me, much of the analysis of the in-ring happenings is both exaggerated and unwarranted and, despite my tenure as a magazine editor, I prefer my writing - and that which I read online - to make its point quickly.
And yet, the best platform do that, Twitter, isn’t a place I enjoy either, as I’m not interested in its algorithm telling me what is good content and what is not, nor do I have any desire to give it a life’s worth of thought. As if I need to say it, Twitter has proven that enlightenment is not at the top of its agenda, no matter what the talking point.
Recently, I’ve come to think that the most gratifying thing for me would be to make quick notes here on Substack based on the topic of the day, or the wrestling I’ve managed to watch in the preceding hours. Ideally, I’d fire off a few sentences and move onto the next thing, because that way I’d feel under less pressure to attack my watch list, but I’m also conscious that I don’t want you to receive emails or other notifications every time I write a single paragraph.
Anyone who blogs, or writes, or puts thoughts to paper (keyboard?) in any way knows that it’s good practice to write something every day, even if it’s just a few sentences.
If I can find a way to make that work here, I’m going to do it.
In the meantime, here’s some must-watch Jumbo Tsuruta.
